[glow=red,2,300]Blu-Ray Chip Problem Could Lead to Delay of PS3 Release[/glow]
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 10:39 AM
Take this with a shaker full of grains of salt, but imdb.com is reporting that China's Commercial Times newspaper is reporting that Sony's production facilities have not been able to meet the demand for the diode that powers Blu-ray.
If it's true, it could mean a delay in the release of both Sony's Blu-Ray player and (gasp) the PS3.
It also means today is what we call a "slow news day."
Should any more info become available, we'll give you the skinny.

IMDB couldn't be trusted to hold a fork upright. Much less tell us about a system's delay.

True, true, but for the sake of meaningless discussion, its better than saying "HOTT" every other word.

Well, if it were from a more reliable source, I would probably say:
"In your face, SONY!!!!!!!!!!"
But it is from IMDB, so I won't even bother.

[glow=red,2,300]White Council convening on 360, PS3, and PC[/glow] [UPDATE] After months of rumors, the next-generation Lord of the Rings-inspired role-playing game is finally official; 'open world' title due in late 2007.By Tor Thorsen, GameSpotJul 13, 2006 9:54 am PT In January ex-3D Realms developer Jim Norwood gave an interview with his former employers at 3D Realms--and revealed he was at work on a new Lord of the Rings title at his current gig at Electronic Arts. "I'm currently on Lord of the Rings: The White Council at EA as a software engineer," he told 3D Realms. "It's a new RPG game. That's all public information, so feel free to look it up on the Internet or EA's website." Apparently, Norwood spoke too soon, as EA refused to comment on the existence of The White Council. As the year progressed, though, suspicions began to grow that the game was one and the same as Project Gray Company. The title was an unnamed "next-generation" role-playing game from executive producer Steve Gray--who also headed up development of EA's first LOTR role-playing game, The Lord of the Rings, The Third Age. A site for the code-named title described the game as being set "in a massive open world where you can go anywhere you want, and the characters in this world are powered by an incredible simulation [artificial intelligence] based on the same technology used by the makers of The Sims 2." Rumors began to boil over when Gray gave a presentation in the UK where he showed slides of his game that clearly contained design elements from the Lord of the Rings films, which EA owns the game rights to. Lo and behold, as EA kicked off its annual summer showcase at its California headquarters today, the publisher revealed that yes, Steve Gray is indeed executive-producing The Lord of the Rings: The White Council, an "open world" role-playing game for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Gameplay will feature numerous quests within an overarching plot à la The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and players will be able to create man, elf, dwarf, or hobbit characters. The White Council is based on an original storyline "derived from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings novels" and will use design elements from director Peter Jackson's LOTR films. Details on the game were thin, but EA did say that players' ultimate goal was to serve the fabled White Council, an august body whose members included the elf queen Galadriel, elf king Elrond, wizard Gandalf, and arch-mage Saruman--before he turned to evil. [UPDATE] Later in the day at the EA press event, the publisher announced that LOTR stars Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett, and Christopher Lee would lend their voices and likenesses to the game. The Lord of the Rings: The White Council is currently set to ship in late 2007. www.gamespot.com/news/6153952.html

[glow=red,2,300]Final Fantasy XI Sequel in Development[/glow]Square Enix plans release for PS3, Xbox 360 and Vista.by Anoop Gantayat July 17, 2006 - Japan's Nikkei Net news service reported today that Square Enix is currently working on a sequel to Final Fantasy XI. The next-generation massively multiplayer online RPG is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows Vista formats. Further details are not provided (including whether or not said sequel is a direct follow-up to the adventures of Vana'diel or if it isn't). Square Enix has previously shown trailers for a next-generation MMORPG engine without actually announcing a final product based around the engine. It's unclear if the FFXI sequel is going to be the game to use the new engine, or if Square Enix has another title in development. Final Fantasy XI (Xbox 360) In April, Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka told Impress Game Watch that a similar game was in development when asked what was next for the producer and his team (you can read the full story by clicking here). Given the platforms mentioned and the nature of the project currently underway, it is likely these two titles are one in the same. IGN contacted Square Enix representatives for comment but they could not be reached as we went to press. ps3.ign.com/articles/719/719204p1.html

[glow=red,2,300] Kutaragi To Headline TGS[/glow] Sony president to deliver keynote address prior to show.by Anoop Gantayat July 19, 2006 - Ken Kutaragi is going to bring the message home himself at the Tokyo Game Show. Sony Computer Entertainment's president will be heading off the show this year, delivering a keynote address titled "Next Generation Entertainment Made by the PS3." Joining Kutaragi will be Square Enix president Yoichi Wada. Wada will be addressing the crowd as his alter ego, the chairman of TGS organizer Computer Entertainment Software Association (CESA), and will give a speech titled "The Game Industry's Potential and Problems." These two have some big shoes to fill. Last year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata used his keynote address to unveil the Wii's innovative new controller. A tough act to follow for sure. The keynotes will be held on 9/22, a business-only day that precedes the 9/23 and 9/24 public openings. Be sure and stay tuned for a full report. psp.ign.com/articles/719/719683p1.html

[glow=red,2,300] Crave Isn't "All In" on PS3[/glow] Despite ESRB's web listing, the developer isn't dealing Sony in for next-generation.by Chris Roper July 24, 2006 - The ESRB's website can be a great place for digging up development news on unannounced titles, and more specifically, specific platforms for known games that haven't yet been announced. Sometimes though, information gathered from the site isn't always 100% correct, as is the case with Crave's latest poker title, World Championship Poker: Featuring Howard Lederer "All In". The site lists that the game has been approved for a "T" for Teen rating for a number of systems, including the PlayStation 3. Not only would this have spilled the beans on a second next-generation version of the title (in addition to the Xbox 360 version), but it would have also been the first ESRB-rated title for the PS3. However, no such version has been announced, nor much less currently in development. A representative speaking on behalf of Crave told us that the developer was covering its bases in case it had decided to port the game to Sony's next-gen console, but as of now, no PS3 version is planned. So there you have it. ps3.ign.com/articles/720/720642p1.html

Do my eyes decieve me? A sequel to Beyond Good and Evil?Well, I nearly had a heart attack after seeing this site. If this is true, then I will be the first in line, waiting days before it hits shelves. It looks like all that time begging and pleading may soon be paying off. Here is the link: igo.ampednews.com/news/3208/Please get the first one, and then go straight to buying this one, if it is true. One of the best games of all time, and it may have finally gotten the sequel it deserves.

[glow=red,2,300] Retailers List Oblivion for PSP, PS3[/glow] Even if it's not true, you can place pre-orders now.by Daemon Hatfield July 26, 2006 - Gamers have lost many, many hours of their lives to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion since it was released earlier this year, and most of us are just now starting to piece ourselves back together. So far this obsession has only left Xbox 360s and PCs overworked, but other (and future) consoles might not be safe forever. Rumors that the game will reach the PlayStation 3 and PSP aren't new -- a release schedule apparently leaked from Bethesda earlier this spring showed the versions as coming out this year. Now mysterious listings on online retail sites lend more weight to this speculation. Though far from any sort of confirmation, both EB Games and Gamestop list Bethesda's epic RPG as being released for the PSP on March 15, 2007, for $49.99, and for the PS3 on November 17, 2006 for $59.99. In the past, these sorts of listings have predicted game announcements with some success. Bethesda could not immediately be reached for comment. For now, we will assume the pose of The Thinker, and meditate on this. ps3.ign.com/articles/721/721132p1.html

[glow=red,2,300]China Joyful Over PS3[/glow]Sony's next system draws huge lines.by Anoop Gantayat July 31, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment will be making its big PS3 splash at the Tokyo Game Show in late September, but first came the pre-game show, an appearance at China Joy in Shanghai. The PS3 went on display at China's largest game show, and based off various accounts, was quite the hit, with gamers lining up to get a glimpse at the system. Alas, a glimpse was all they got. PS3 software was on display in video form only, with Sony resurrecting its PS3 Theater with a digest version of the footage shown at E3. The company also had PS3 hardware in glass cases, but no playable games. Still, a lengthy line formed around the SCE Asia booth. What's really... funny?... is that the PS3 may not even be released in China at all. Japan's Impress Watch reports that the launch timing of the PS3 in the Chinese market is depending on the Chinese government. Apparently, Peking has some sort of zany law that restricts sales of computer games, and especially overseas developed consoles. SCE Asia, which has an office set up in Peking, is currently attempting to work around this problem, as well as other issues involving customs and content censorship. Based on the lines at China Joy, the Chinese will be happy when, and if, they do get the new system. ps3.ign.com/articles/721/721995p1.html
